How do I stop summer learning loss? ›

Children lose up to 40% of the gains they have made over the school year while on summer break, according to a new study. The 'summer slide', or 'summer learning loss', reversing some of the progress students have made over the year, is a well-known effect of the summer break.

We did find that they benefited kids academically. Basically, kids learned in the summer program about 15% of what they learned during the school year.

Maximum Course Registration

Students may enroll in no more than 15 credit hours during the entire summer, regardless of the combination of terms. There are also limitations to how many credit hours you can take during the various summer terms: 3 credit hour maximum in a 3-week term.

If you fail a class, you'll get a 0 on your transcript — and that can bring down your GPA. Failed classes count toward your GPA, though some colleges do not count pass/fail classes in your GPA calculation. If you get an F, you still have to pay for the class without receiving any credit toward your degree.

While letting an elective class go and not retaking it is an option, summer school grades replace the failing grade already earned. That will raise your teen's GPA.

Concerns about students forgetting what they learned in the school year across a long summer break date back approximately 100 years. This phenomenon of losing academic skills during the summer, which is often referred to as “ summer learning loss” or “summer slide,” is widely reported each summer.

Research suggests the majority of the achievement gap is attributable to the “summer slide,” the accumulated lack of summer experiences that cause a child to lose academic ground.

It is noted that summer schools can positively impact academic achievement, the educational benefits may vary by student based on socioeconomic factors and program design may also impact academic improvement.

Earn additional credentials

Earning additional credits over the summer has another benefit as well: building credits for an additional credential that will look great on your resume. Taking classes over the summer might enable you to graduate with a double major, for example, without extending your time in college.

Con: Summer School Courses Move Quickly

This means your professors have to pack more into each day than they would during the spring and fall semesters. Sometimes the classes are longer, and other times the homework is more intense. You will have tests and quizzes with more regularity.

Students benefit because summer session classes meet degree pathway initiatives, which means they may graduate sooner. Students can also benefit from these added classes if the in-demand courses are often full during regular semesters.

This rule applies even if your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan. The average school year is 180 days. So, your child can only miss 18 days of school or 18 days of a specific class (or 9 days if they're on a semester schedule) before the 90% rule affects their class credit.

As mentioned previously, I would recommend not taking more than two 8-week or 10-week courses and limiting yourself to one Maymester (2-week) or one 4-week course. However, you can mix and match your summer courses to fit in 3 or even 4 college classes without burning yourself out.

A college student is considered to be enrolled on a full-time basis for student financial aid purposes if they are enrolled for at least 12 credits a semester. Since a class typically requires at least three credits, 12 credits will require four classes per semester.

The failing grade will NOT calculate in your GPA, but it will still show on your transcript. On your transcript, an "E" will show to the right of your failing grade to mark the course as "Excluded". On your transcript, an "I" will show to the right of the second time you took the class, marking it as "Included".

The Consequences of Failing a Class

A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.

Don't Take TOO Many Classes

While some students can handle 18 credits (or even more) in a single semester, you might feel more comfortable taking 12 to 15. This is especially the case if you're an upperclassman and taking much more difficult courses.

Breaking it down further, most college courses at schools with semesters are worth three credit hours. So on average, you would expect to take five classes a semester. That's above the usual minimum, which is 12 hours, and below the maximum, which is normally 18.
