Leeuwarden Summer School on Cultural and Linguistic Diversity
Are you interested in how people access education, public services and wealth differently and how they participate in the public debate?
Modern societies are home to a highly diverse population, where social exclusion or marginalization can affect people's well-being and health. For example, most public administrations go to great lengths to implement policies aimed at teaching newcomers the majority language (Dutch, German or English), but most professionals know that there is more to be done to promote social cohesion. At certain schools, the student body is so diverse that local minorities and immigrants speak dozens of languages in the schoolyard, leading some schools to have restrictive language use policies in the classroom and around the school. What are the best strategies to combat this diversity?
The Summer School on Managing Diversity for Social Justice will take place in Leeuwarden, Netherlands from 20th to 24th June 2022. This interdisciplinary school caters to graduate students, postgraduates, budding researchers and professionals interested in diversity management and social justice. We understand "social justice" as equity manifested in society and therefore includes equal access to wealth, opportunity and privilege in health, education, employment, housing and much more. We define "management" as actions taken to influence or intervene in linguistic and cultural practices in specific contexts. The courses we offer include:
- diversity management and city policy;
- diversity management and policies in (higher) education;
- managing diversity in the workplace;
- Diversity Management, Language Planning and Indigenous Minorities
- A special session will be devoted to decolonization research, management practices and policy writing.
At conferences, roundtables and workshops, an international roster of speakers from diverse fields – sociolinguistics, sociology, anthropology, cultural and media studies – will share their research and insights. During our workshops, various partner organizations and institutes will contribute their expertise and specific challenges: Summer school participants, together with teachers, will put theoretical tools into practice and test guideline writing using concrete case studies.

The summer school is for those interested in diversity management and social justice. It is a graduate school and participants can expect high-quality academic discussions based on empirical research. Therefore, the school is designed to:
- Master's students and doctoral students
- young scientists
Teachers, policy makers, managers and other professionals interested in the topic.
Participants are expected to have sufficient knowledge of English to actively participate in discussions and present their own work in English.
The summer school provides participants with advanced tools to understand and implement changes in diversity management. In particular, after the summer school, our students will be able to:
- conceptualize diversity management for social justice, gain knowledge of current theoretical approaches and empirical studies;
- Evaluate and formulate specific challenges related to diversity in different contexts, such as higher education, municipal politics and the workplace;
- Develop and evaluate diversity and inclusion policies;
- Develop and implement effective techniques to promote intercultural communication and multicultural management.
Workload and certificate
- Preparatory reading: 44 hours
- Contact time: 40 hours
- Deployment (optional): 56 hours
During the summer school, participants will have the opportunity to give a twenty-minute presentation on their own diversity management research (optional). You will receive feedback on your presentation from speakers and peers. The presentation will be recognized on the certificate of participation.
Upon successful completion of the program, the summer school provides a certificate of attendance. Additional homework (including a reading list) will be provided to participants who wish to use their summer school credit as academic credit. After successfully completing the task, you will receive your certificate of participation, which proves the workload of 140 hours (28 hours correspond to 1 ECTS). Students can request recognition of these credits from the competent authorities of their home university, so the final decision on the allocation of credits is at the discretion of their home university. We will be happy to provide you with the necessary information that is requested, in addition to the certificate of participation.

This summer course is the second edition of the Leeuwarden Summer School on Cultural and Linguistic Diversity. This annual summer school explores how cultural and linguistic diversity underlies social, economic and educational inequalities. We believe that managing diversity through specific policies in different areas of society is the key to a sustainable society where the well-being of all citizens is valued. Diversity mismanagement, on the other hand, wastes vast amounts of skills, knowledge and human potential, with endless social costs to our communities. Responding to these challenges requires advanced and interdisciplinary knowledge on the part of researchers, policy makers and practitioners, and we intend to contribute to this with a series of summer schools. Each year, the summer school focuses on a different theme related to cultural and linguistic diversity.
